Two applicants achieve different scores on a practical test. One has spent years helping in a family workshop; the other has only recently encountered the tools. The test may accurately record what each can do today. The difficulty begins when this result is used to explain why their performances differ. Had the opportunities that preceded the test been more evenly distributed, the difference it records might have been smaller. To treat that difference as a measure of fixed ability is therefore to make a claim for which the scores alone provide no warrant, however consistently the same test has been administered. Recognizing this limit does not tell us whom to select. It shows why a selection decision needs justification beyond the claim that everyone took the same test

試験に先行する機会がより均一に分配されていたなら、それが記録する違いはより小さかったかもしれない。その差を固定された能力の基準として扱うことはゆえに、どれだけ一貫して同じ試験を行っていても、その主張に対しスコア単独では根拠を与えることができない。

模範訳
試験に先立つ機会がもっと均等に与えられていたなら、その試験が記録する差はもっと小さかったかもしれない。したがって、その差を固定的な能力の尺度として扱うことは、同じ試験がいかに一貫した方法で実施されていたとしても、得点だけでは裏付けられない主張をすることになる。
