A town can repair its riverside park cheaply by covering the damaged ground with a material that will be difficult to remove. Another method costs more but leaves later residents free to redesign the area. Nobody knows what those residents will want. Some council members take this uncertainty as a reason to consider only present needs. The less we can know about the purposes of those who will inherit a decision, the more reason there may be to preserve their ability to revise it. This does not require treating every future preference as binding on the present generation; it requires recognizing that an inexpensive choice can become costly when it closes options for people who had no part in making it. Reversibility, on this view, has value precisely because future agreement cannot be assumed.

決定を受け継ぐ人の目的について知ることができなければできないほど、それの修正余地を残すより一層強い理由となるかもしれない。これは将来人々の好みを現在世代に縛り付けることとして扱うことを求めているわけではない。それはお金があまりかからない今の選択が、その選択に関わらなかった人々にとってその選択肢を閉じるとき費用がかかりうるという再認識を求めている。

模範訳
ある決定の結果を受け継ぐ人々の目的について知りうることが少ないほど、その人々が決定を見直せる余地を残す理由は強まる場合がある。これは、将来のあらゆる好みを現在の世代を拘束するものとして扱うことを要求するものではない。安価な選択でも、その選択に関与できなかった人々の選択肢を閉ざすなら、高くつくものになりうると認めることを要求するのである。
