For years, a village festival ended with a heavy wooden boat being carried through narrow streets. As the population aged, fewer residents could take part. The organizers proposed putting the boat on wheels. Some objected that this would destroy the custom; others recalled that the route itself had changed when the old bridge was removed. To preserve every visible feature would be to preserve a moment in the festival’s history at the expense of the relationships that had kept it alive. Whether the proposed change would sustain those relationships was a question the old form alone could not answer, since its meaning had depended on what people were able to do together. The disagreement concerned the location of continuity: in the object, in the repeated action, or in the shared work that made the action possible.
